Subject: when should I run the next Marathon?
|
I ran the 2006 Marine Marathon on 29th Oct. That was my first marathon. Most of the places on internet says take 26 days of rest before starting any serious running. My overall time was 5 hour at the MCM. I walked a lot in last 6 mile. I was in pain. Till mile 20 I was running at 4hrs and 30min marathon pace. I could not keep up with the cliff bar pace team after 20Mile. I ran 27miles a week from May to October for the Marine Marathon. Anyway, I am going to run the 1/2 Marathon in Atlanta on Thanksgiving day. I will run it as a 13 mile long run. I may hurt myself if I try to run the full Marathon. That is why I am running the half. I plan to run the ING Marathon at Atlanta on 25th March. I need advice. what should I do to increase my speed and run the ING Marathon in March below 4 hours .I have access to very good gym with all kind of equipment. At present I am trying to increase my cadence to 180 from 160 on some short easy pace runs.

Congratulations on the marathon! Great first effort. I would be careful about the half-marathon. If your legs are fresh and springy, then go and run it as a long run. But if they are still a little stale from the marathon, you might want to think twice. Could be a recipe for injury that could put you out for much longer. Beware of getting the "Invincible Runner Syndrome" from your post-race enthusiasm! 4 hours is a laudable goal. But, at this point, I think you would be better served to just increase your base and maybe increase the length or frequency of the long runs (depending on where you are now) just so you can finish without walking. Once you can complete a marathon non-stop, then you can think about tweaking your speed. Good luck in Atlanta! You don't need to take anything like 26 days off. Maybe they mean wait 26 days before racing again...I usually need 3-4 weeks before I feel like getting into hard training again, but I'm usually ready to run after 5 days (and I shuffle a bit before that...). > My overall time was 5 hour at the MCM. If you were to average 40-45 miles/week, you will be stronger, and may be able to keep it up and run 4:30 ish. > Anyway, I am going to run the 1/2 Marathon in Atlanta on Thanksgiving > day. That is a smart move, but don't turn it into a death march, try and run it easy... > I plan to run the ING Marathon at Atlanta on 25th March. > I need advice. what should I do to increase my speed and run the ING > Marathon in March below 4 hours. Sub four may or may not be within your grasp at this time -- it is what it is. If you can run a 10k in 48-49 minutes, and get your mileage up to 40+ with long runs, you may have a shot at it, but no guarantees. Also, losing weight makes a big difference. If you can get your BMI down to 23 or less, you'll go faster... > I have access to very good gym with > all kind of equipment. Others on this board can point you to some good training programs...

Run when you feel like running. Listen to you body. > My overall time was 5 hour at the MCM. I > walked a lot in last 6 mile. I was in pain. As mentioned that is pretty low mileage for marathon training. Lots of folks with that kind of mileage never finish, so you seem to be a strong runner. > > Anyway, I am going to run the 1/2 Marathon in Atlanta on Thanksgiving > day. I have used the Galloway book for running the marathon. I found I like his philosophy of getting in long mileage before the actual race. And the three week taper is a must. So a March target for your next one sounds like a good plan. Keep in touch and let us know how it's going. Enjoy the run. Ed
