It hurts!
I did my first track workout of the season on Tuesday, yesterday developed
pain in the musclse and tendon running down the outside of the shin and
tendon at the ankle. The same problem I had last Fall except on the other
side.
I've run all my best times in the past without track workouts.

No more track!

Parker, it was boring enough the first time you posted about your sore
hooves.

What kind of track workout? (too much too soon?)

I haven't had time to go to a track, so I've mixed in a workout similar
to what Doug described. I simply do one minute intervals (60seconds
fast, 60seconds recovery). After warmup, I do as many intervals as I
can in the distance I run that day (on my shorter days).

I like the preciseness of a track workout, but it's not a necessity.

Hope you get better quickly.

No I've been doing speed as Doug describes for a while
Any track is too much I guess.

I'd be surprised if any one workout alone caused a substantial injury, unless
you were running very fast during the workout (sprinting or close), or weren't
very well trained (probably not the case). If it's a short track, the turns
could give you trouble, but usually that takes several workouts to actually
cause an injury.

Cheers,

I don't follow why this should be the case -- does the g-force on the
turns hurting you or something ? I didn't know you were that fast (-;

Yeah, I was blasting out 3:10-3:15 1/2 mile splits! Not exactly setting the
world on fire.

I'm not sure but I have a feeling the turns may be a factor. I wasn't
really on a track, I was running 1/2 mile repeats, 2 laps on a measured
residential loop Some of the turns are probalby actually sharper than a
track as the "straightaways" were longer than the "turns".

Strange I never had this problem before, maybe my orthotics are over
correcting.

Maybe it's time to break down and try a Chiroquacktor!

Well there's yer problem, Parker. Those spikes are meant for a track, not
the streets. That'll give anyone shin pain! ;-)

I meant to write they were longer than the ones on a 400 meter track.

I would tend to agree -- if the turns are too sharp, that could cause
problems, and they could have all kinds of weird interactions with your
orthotics too, because who knows what the orthotics are doing to your feet
once you start throwing in lateral forces here and there.

If you're running on a sidewalk or even on a road, on "square blocks", I would
say that's a fair bit too sharp even for a 6:30 pace.

Ok. But ... I'm curious. My normal progression (which I'm violating at
the moment but that's a different story) is to develop a mileage base,
and then to hit hills and fartlek for at least several weeks before I
go to a track for speed. By the time I get to the track, this way, I've
got the strength to take a good hard track workout.

Did you hit the hills and fartlek for a while before going to the track?
Or were you coming off just base mileage?

I had a good mileage base and had been doing a decent amount of speed on the
road before this.
I really think it is a result of all the turns. I did this I've done two
track like workouts but not on the track (on the road with very long gentle
turns) since then with no problems. The first workout I did was on the roads
but on a small loop with turns that were probably tighter than a 400 meter
track.
