It hurts!
I did my first track workout of the season on Tuesday, yesterday developed
pain in the muscle on the outside of the right shin and tendon on the
outside of the ankle. It's the same problem I had last Fall except on the
other side.

I've run all my best times in the past without track workouts, what was I
thinking.
No more track!

I have no experience with track workouts, but the "speedwork" that I
attempted to do last Fall for a 5k failed and led to a calf injury. There's
a really good reason coach Clyde Hart never has his 400 meter runners do any
speedwork. He only lets them rip in races. Granted, speedwork for distance
isn't the same as sprint speedwork, but it's got to be considered risky
stuff, especially for the aging runner. I'll never do anything above
threshold work from now on, even though I love to sprint. I'll confine my
sprinting to short bursts in the occasional pick-up soccer game.

The only sprinting I do is to catch the traffic light (especially the one I
have to wait nearly a minute for -- and no, I can't ignore it, it's a major
street I need to cross, lotsa traffic) or in a race when I can smell the
finish line (it's almost over!).

How old is "aging"? I'm not entering my dotage like Doug (I'm just 49) but
I love my sprinting. Our club's hill repeats session is one of my
favourites. There's nothing like that surge of power and speed that you can
get out of well warmed up legs.

I had a great track workout one night where I felt great ( a year ago last
September), but it was my only track workout at the end of a very good
racing season.
So I don't think it's needed for me.
Some bodies just aren't built for it.

Of course it depends on the person. At 43, I've had some major health issues
and joint problems. In this sense it has less to do with aging than with the
kind of health problems you experience in your life.

that advice too.

Tim, Why not get help with your pot addiction? Smoking joints at 43 is
just sad, and it's no wonder you are having health problems.

I'm wounded. :)

At my advanced age I'm just glad to get to get out of bed, put my teeth
back in, and find my wrap around walker sand make it to the loo. Age
aside, we all agree that speed work is a necessary evil if one is to
excel to the Nth degree.

I do a repeat hill session every other Saturday with a hill that has
1,200 feet up over 2.5 miles. As you might imagine it is a slow grind
up but when we are on our last lap I add some short surges. Let's just
say it's a acceleration in effort that doesn't traverse much distance.
We usually run the hill in about 33 minutes. Other times we will run it
about 31 minutes. I'll bet your repeats are shorter. ;)

In Troon where my club is based, on one of the longer hills you can run for
a full 60 seconds before you reach the top and it rises nearly 20ft. So
yes, just a teensy bit shorter. ;-)

Amen! A few of us have been doing Wed, morning speed workouts. When I
suggested we add some speed to schedule for those that are not doing
speed some other day the other three said, almost in unison, I'm NOT
going back to the track. I thought I was the only one that felt that
way. Anyway, I never intended to use a track and we are simply doing 4
minutes at some pace that made us breath hard, and two minutes rest
times 6 on a undulating road. Call it fartlek, lactic threshold or
plodding along, they loved the impreciseness of running for time. What
is important, this was the third workout and everyone was starting get
their rhythm and the workout went well. The first two sucked.
