I know every body is different but is there any sort of rule of thumb that
gives some idea how much extra weight costs you in speed? "x number of
pounds = y number of seconds per mile"

Click on the little blue graphs at page bottom. They show the effect of
one extra kilogram (2 1/4 lbs) on marathon, HM and 10k times for a number
of base weights.
How to read: find the curve which is nearest your weight in kilos. Look at
your current race time on the left hand side. Read across til you hit your
curve. Read down to find the number of minutes faster/slower you'd be for
each kilogram less or more you weigh.
eg If you can do a 2h00 HM an you weigh 78 kilos, you could gain as much
as 6-7 minutes for a 10lb weight loss.

Shuffle in your pocket? Works great for me. Or one of them with an
armband? My roommate's got one with a water-resistant plastic case.
Actually, it's probably more about good case selection than device
selection.
