Twisted my ankle four months ago playing basketball. Had x-ray and it
wasnt broken, not too swollen. Anyway, it would heal then I would be
late for a train and run on it and the pain would come back. Apart
from running on it any other advice?

I went to a docs last week and he showed me how to tape it for support,
but he didnt do the whole thing. He showed and anchor under the foot
then up and over and around the top of my ankle. I also think walking
in sneakers is better than hard shoes so I will try that, any advice?

Try some proper physical therapy, with exercises to strengthen the ankle.

It's *work*.
But it really does help. Tape is just a band-aid.

Once you stretch the tendons and ligaments beyond a certain point, it
takes a long time to return, if ever. Actually, I should have said once
you tear them because that's what you do with a bad sprain. So you
should plan on taping it for the long term and testing it every so
often. Taping itself can begin to cause problems when done every day,
especially due to the tape across the top. Even leaving off that top
tape will still provide some ankle support. I use duct tape.

After a bad sprain (w a chip of malleolus torn),
I'm using a Thuasne Ligastrap -- interesting strapping device, feels comfy.
I biked and ran today, 2 hours (nice hot weather, and water from a corn
sprayer) : no hindrance, no chafing.

I'm told to use an ankle brace, the semirigid type that you tighten w a
cord (Thuasne Dynastab Ankle Dual), but some people say the strapping is
just as fine.

For my early-May sprain, I had an Immostrap for 4 weeks - 24/24 for the
first week - (two hard shells, bound with velcros + a cross-over strap
underneath) with Flector Tissugel anti-inflammatories.

Then I just used the strap part for a month or so, all day, then just for
running for about another six weeks. During that last month I had
"mesontherapy" sessions and over the whole period had two physiotherapy
sessions per week.

Finally I used he strap just for fast running, over the past few weeks.

And the bloody thing still hurts a bit :oP
