If you are running in the heat is it smart to soak yourself?

And when these aren't problems, it feels good and IMO that makes it
worthwhile. Both my local track and my local park have water
fountains. I drink plenty and splash water on myself too, though I'll
try to avoid soaking my shoes too much.

I can't argue with that. If you're stopping to this, then that might have
something to do with it too.

Bad idea, if you're wearing cotton. It might help if you have ready access
to cold water along your route. Allowing the water to run into your shoes
might create a potential blister problem. If you're carrying the water,
then it's more important to be drinking it.

Personally, I'd rather just acclimate to the heat or run at a cooler time
of day. Bring plenty of fluids for drinking before, during, and after your
workout. Slow down your pace in accordance with the heat. As you've
mentioned in another thread, slowing down may not be possible for you.

evolution punishes stupid behaviour so it will associate pain with
running(recreational) in the heat. i guess anything that turns off the
pain warning should be looked upon with suspicion. elephants spray
water and mud over themselves to protect themselves form sun and bugs.
if the bodies thermostat is in the brain it might be dangerous to wet
your head because the body may then not take action to adapt to the
heat.

I sometimes splash some water in my face, other than getting some of
the sweat out of my eyes it feels good for just a little while. I
don't think its been harmful in any way.

Slightly more detail. I read somewhere recently that an actual
Scientific Research Study (please, a moment of silence in deference to
the Majesty of Science) said that sponging / splashing / pouring water
on oneself didn't do anything to reduce body temp and was therefore not
worth the bother.

I am dubious. Even if it's "merely" psychological, a few seconds after
dousing myself in a race my feet seem to speed up of their own accord.
*And* it feels good. And it also washes away some of the salt which
has accumulated on my skin, which given enough time will otherwise
grind away some of the skin where one moving part (e.g. upper arm)
brushes another (side). And did I mention that it feels good? It
does.

Happy 4th, my fellow Murricans, whether or not you go soak your head.

I have never done it but some people claim it helps, is to put ice under
your hat. Very common in the ultra world for hot races. Unlike a quick
splash which is momentary feel good, I wonder if ice on the top of the
head may effect core temp and be beneficial? An observation, not a
answer and too lazy to look it up.

I've done that, and it works great! Put a bunch of ice cubes into a ziplock
and put it under your hat. It only lasts about 30 mins but it really helps
cool you.

I have run with a wet hat and it seemed to help.

As another poster said, it certainly doesn't seem to hurt.

If I take water in a 5k race, I usually do it to splash my face. In 10K
or longer, I'm drinking the water.

But that's just me.

if it's really stinking hot and you are really feeling it, yeah, do it.
on these hot, humid days, i take a water bottle out on any runs over a
half hour (all of them), mainly to squirt water over my head now and
then, as well to keep well hydrated. during my May half marathon when
it was exceptionally hot, i doused myself constantly, ran thru
sprinklers, used sponges, etc to keep the cooler. it works, and it does
not harm.
