It's called urban sprawl. ;-) Seriously though, except for the half marathon, I've never run in downtown Atlanta. If you like running trails and you don't mind a 20 mile drive, then go to Kennesaw Mountain. The best running area in metro Atlanta. If that's too far then if you can get to midtown, you might try Piedmont Park. In fact, maybe Piedmont Donald (rec.running poster) can give you some better ideas. Here's a link to a Runner's World article on running in Atlanta - http://tinyurl.com/l8nag Have fun. Wish I could join you. ;-( -- Phil M. "Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever." - Lance Armstrong

For an Olympic flavored run, take Peachtree Street (Here I assume you're not too far from the downtown Ritz Carlton) south to Mitchell Street (.6 mile), turn left, go .8 mile to Capital Avenue and turn right to follow the Olympic course route under the Olympic rings (< 1 mile) towards the remaining Olympic stadium (now Turner Field). The Atlanta Marathon start and finish are about halfway between the Rings and the stadium. http://www.atlantatrackclub.org/am-coursemap.pdf To return, turn around and follow the marathon start north. Don't turn on Mitchell St, but continue north to follow the marathon course. Capital Avenue becomes Piedmont Avenue. Milemarkers are in white paint at the right-hand curb. On the right, about 3.5 miles from the marathon start is Piedmont Park, which is the finish area for the Peachtree Road race. http://www.atlantatrackclub.org/at02020.htm Piedmont Avenue runs parallel to and 2 or 3 blocks east of Peachtree Street between the Mitchell Street and about 14th St., so you could loop back when ever you want. To run at Piedmont Park without using all your miles of dodging city traffic, take Marta http://www.itsmarta.com/getthere/schedules/index-rail.htm to the Midtown station and go about 4 blocks east to reach the southern edge of Piedmont Park. Are you up for a Sunday morning run at the "local" Kennesaw Mountain? http://www.nps.gov/kemo/pphtml/maps.html http://www.nps.gov/applications/parks/kemo/ppMaps/KEMOmap1.pdf Piedmont Donald

Piedmont Park used to have some nature trails starting down by the railroad tracks near the Monroe/Park entrance. Some of the local guys you meet on the trail could probably give you directions. I read recently of a rails-to-trails line you can pick up somewhere out toward Marietta Blvd...theres a bus from downtown up Marietta St out to the Cobb County line, and that stretch of M. Blvd is wide and has few cross streets (in spite of the crazy traffic). Morningside/Emory village was always pretty good if you could stay off the main streets (and there are some pretty good hills, too). Finally, the Georgia Tech campus isn't bad during the summer when it's only grad students and scientists. The Home Park neighborhood just north of there was pretty calm when I was growing up, but has been gentrified and the people that live there can afford to drive (and do, instead of just putting the vehicles up on blocks). Thanks for all the tips...I should have posted a few days earlier...didn't have a chance to log on. I did find peidmont park. saw the big piece of green on a tourist map. I always run before 7am so the traffic wasn't an issue. we were at the marriot (harris street?) so I just ran up peidmont ave, did a few loopish things in the park, and ran back for about 7.5 miles. It seems there are a lot of "excercise groups" there on monday mornings. Groups of 30something people running stairs and doing calisthenics with a "drill sargent".

Looking to increase my running every day. somehow it doesn't happen. the last two weeks were at 28miles each. In the past year or two I've used Google Satellite Maps (or other similar website) to help answer that question. I punch in the address where I am staying, then look for nearby greenery and trails. In the old days I'd start with parks marked on a AAA road map, but they may not be as running-friendly as they seem. Plus they could miss unmarked trails.

Combined with the local notes I find on " www.runtheplanet.com " I can usually find a pretty, safe, and/or fun run anywhere in the US, Canada, and the EU. This site allows you to plot your run on a google map and get the distances : http://www.gmap-pedometer.com
