Subject: running form: stiff or swinging upper torso?

Saw a young woman running today. She was swinging her upper body with her foot falls. I tried it for a few miles and doesn't feel too bad. Recalled watching a VCR training tape that runners should be a miser with hand and body motions. Should one run like Michael Johnson with shoulders square or turned a bit during running/jogging?

Basically, you either have to swivel your hips or your shoulders when you run. If you swivel your hips, then you get a longer stride with minimal effort. If you swivel your shoulders instead, then the hips end up square to the direction you are running in and you end up with a minimal stride length, plus it tends to take a lot of effort to keep those shoulders swiveling. Ed, that's what I remember and been doing. However, after giving the issue more thought, some women may be better off swinging shoulders a bit. Depending on the shape and size of her mammary gland, energy may be better conserved with shoulders in sync with the oscillation of the glands when trotting forward.
