I lift weights for upper body year round, but since I'm running and biking more in the spring and summer I tend to slack off on doing any leg work in the gym. I just started back to my late fall/winter lifting, and am doing a 10K next Sunday. My question is, is it advisable to do leg work (presses, curls, squats, calf raises, hip abductors and adductors) and then run a race a few days later? I did my leg work Wednesday after putting in about 4.5 miles Tuesday, did 10K this morning and my legs felt a bit "heavy" at the start, but then loosened up. Avoid the leg work this week, or do it and stretch more, or possibly do a light run the day after? Advice? Thanks.

If it's a big one, and you're expecting a PR then I'd suggest no weights in the last 4 days before the race. But if you do that for every race, you won't get any training in. That's the tradeoff you're faced with. I would tend to pick a couple of "goal races" in fall and spring, and taper for those, but train through the others. Cheers, -- Elflord

I would ONLY do some light knee extensions, very light, once a week, at most.

I was just about to ask the same questions. I have always had strong legs. I have ridden horses since I could walk and been running for about 26 years. I was off for a long time just getting back into it over the last 6 months. My gym routine alwyas includes a leg routine...switched up with upper body. Should I really cut out my leg? Thanks for any advice...I'll go back to lurking. Robyn
