so I posted this in last week's training thread:

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.running/msg/8acfc0322ae875ac

I haven't done any racing for the whole year. have only done about 3-5
miles of tempoish running once a week or less for the last 2 months,
and that tempo was just over 7mpm. half marathon pr was on a hard
course (2 laps of central park) at 7:09ish pace about 7 years ago.
last fall I ran a flat half marathon at about 7:15 pace (quite
disappointing).

I did a 7 mile hilly tempo run on Tuesday 7 easy on wed, 5 easy on
thursday and nothing on friday and saturday. Felt great saturday night
and sunday morning.

Stood near the start and assumed I would get pushed back a few rows as
fast people lined up late from the front, but it was small enough of a
race that it didn't happen that way. I ended up starting from the
line. It was small enough of a race that it didn't cause any problems
with people getting passed me. I had duct tape over the HR readout on
my watch because I didn't want to be influenced in any way by anything
other than feel. PAIN! I got caught up in being near the front...it's
really hard to find your pace, because it's really hard to let these
people go when it's early in the race and you have so much adrenaline
and a bit of a taper.

The carnage:

Just an artifact of the fact that I haven't run many 10ks, I am pretty
sure I ran a 10k pr and a half marathon pr at the same time.

1:31:04 average heart rate 179, max 188.

split

6:39 176-181
6:53 181-184
6:52 184-188
6:42 182-186
6:55 180-183
6:45 181-184
3:53+3:08 (7:01) 181-184 (half split 41:39)
7:08 179-183
7:13 177-182
7:07 177-184
7:04 177-181
7:02 176-180
7:38 (6:58pace) 181-187

Any opinions as to what my max HR might be? The highest I've seen on
the monitor was 193.

Hey gg, good to hear from you, and big congrats on PR-ing both the 10k
and the 21k distances in one shot! Nice job, sir. And the sub-7' pace
is a really nice milestone - I know, I just nosed under it this spring
at the Brooklyn half.

FWIW, I ran about a minute slower than your time last fall on slightly
more weekly volume plus a number of tuneup races.

Thinking of racing any more this fall?

Okay, maybe because you were in PAIN 8^) you didn't remember much
details of the race itself. So you lose points on the race competition
side of this report, however
You blew your goal pace right out of the water! You get a big
CONGRATULATIONS!

For not being very motivated you set an impressive pace.

Re: heart rate
I don't know that a half will get you that close to the max. Even going
all out as you seemed to have done, you must be keeping some in reserve
for the later part of the race. If you want to see the HR near your
max, I'd suggest a 5k race (maybe even shorter). I'll let the numbers
guys in the group make some educated guesses. Assuming your max HR is
200, then you were near 90% and that 193 would be over 95% max HR.

But who cares about maxHR? The bottom line is you got a PR. enjoy it.

Great run off of your current training, congratulations!

Interesting HR results. The obvious positive split shows up in the HR also,
despite cardiac creep, except for that last 1.1 miles. I recall that a
marathon can be run at about 88% of max; indeed, my last marathon-like
effort was run at 88%. An all-out HM can be much closer to threshold, but
how much? If your max was 193, 179 is 93% of that, which seems a bit high,
so I'd guess your max is higher. OTOH, I ran a hilly trail half at 93%, but
I believe at least 2% of that was expended battling very high heat and
humidity.

maybe. There is a half in Providence, RI on Nov 4 and one in
Portsmouth, NH Nov 12 that I had written down on a scrap of paper but I
lost it (the motivation to do another half this year. Maybe that will
come back after the soreness in my legs subsides).
I am looking at a very local 10k on November 3.

I would love to do a NY race. My whole obsession with half marathons
stems from Grete's Gallop. I was signed up to do it this year but let
the money go to charity because we got a sort of last minute invitation
to go to Cape Cod with some good friends (I needed the extra two weeks
of running too). I don't see anything in Central Park in November, and
Mrs. Gravity is on call for the whole month of December...so I don't
see us traveling...but Kleinerman and the 15k look tempting. It all
revolves around Mrs. Gravity, her swollen abdomen, and little Gym jr.
too.

Thanks...

Just for fun with the hr monitor...I know a 5k would be best to see a
max...just trying to guess where a max would be based on 179 avg for a
half mar... playing with the numbers because I have them.

Big congrats on *several* PRs!!! Seems you did really well for
not thinking much would come of it! Pain, yes, but look what
results it got you. Can't help on the hr stuff, I've not yet
figured it all out yet myself....but I'd think you wouldn't
have reached a max on a half. Go rest and enjoy yourself, you
deserve it!

I'm surely doing something wrong here but I get 44:36 as a calculated
halfway split... that makes the positive a lot smaller.

Dunno, if you count HM pace as 92%, and taking 183 as average at HM pace
in that race, it gets you around 199.
