Subject: perpetual calf tightness

Hi all,

I play basketball and I cycle to work every day. I do not stretch very
often. Im finding my calf muscles are getting increasingly tight, not
during exercise but during everyday life. I'm sat here at my desk at
work and my calfs just ache and all i've done today is cycle, i havent
trained or played basketball in over a week. Its more porminent in my
right calf but my left isnt comfortable either.

This isnt a sudden thing, they have ached for more than a year now but
they are starting to get more uncomfortable. I find if I've been doing
sport and I lie down and look at my calfs afterwards they pulse and its
almost liek somethigns moving under the skin. Kind of like little
electrical pulses are causing the muscle to twitch in small palces
every few seconds. Its freaky to watch!

I'm 21, 5ft 8 and ten and a half stone. I cycle to work for 20 minutes
every day up and down soem fairly big hills. I cycle home it takes 15
minutes. I do not feel overly tired when i've finished my cycle as my
cardio is pretty good. I also do not feel my calfs ache straight after
exercise, in fact thats probably when they're most comfortable.

Any suggestions as to what to do?

Thanks
Matt

It certainly might help to do some effective stretches after exercise.

You might also consider a foam roll. For example, see
http://www.power-systems.com/News/01_26_06.aspx and especially
http://www.power-systems.com/news/01_26_06b.aspx .

I use the roll occassionally. It is great!

There lies the root of your problem... Stretch it out!

I have suffered a similar problem. I bought a massage stick and it
works- http://www.thestick.com/

Ah, well, then. Jersey calves are smaller.

A good calf stretch - stand in front of a wall, place your hands on the
wall for support, and walk your feet backwards a bit. Now try to press
one heel or the other into the ground. Find the distance from the wall
so that, with a bit of effort but not too much, you can press your heel
into the ground, and "walk" from this position - by "walk" I mean just
alternate pressing your heels into the ground in a rhythm similar to
slow walking. Lock the knee when pressing the heel into the ground,
otherwise you will not stretch the calf muscle.
