hello all, i'm a new runner and i've been really happy with my progress over the course of the last month. i've gone from being a smoker barely able to run a mile to running almost 2 full 9 minute miles without walking. i am concerned about my knees. generally they only hurt for the first minute or so - just until i get used to the motion - but today, after having skipped 3 days of running for unrelated reasons, my knees hurt much worse and for about 5 minutes this time... is this going to progress? is there an easy fix? could it be that my knees are just achy and building strength? the pain is located on the inner portion of my knee, just behind the kneecap - is this a problem with my patela (sp?) - do i need those silly knee wraps with the holes in the middle? sorry for the bulk questions... thanks in advanced for any help! thanks again, krep

Thanks again for your posts. I did some further research and found out that part of my problem may be related to the fact that i am doing almost nothing in the way of warm-up. Also, the footwear thing is a problem - especially for people with flat feet. I grabbed the following from http://healthlink.mcw.edu/article/926052680.html - i hope people can use this in the future to help themselves. -- Preventing Knee Problems Some knee problems, such as those resulting from an accident, can't be foreseen or prevented. However, a person can prevent many knee problems by following these suggestions: Before exercising or participating in sports, warm up by walking or riding a stationary bicycle, then do stretches. Stretching the muscles in the front of the thigh (quadriceps) and back of the thigh (hamstrings) reduces tension on the tendons and relieves pressure on the knee during activity. Strengthen the leg muscles by doing specific exercises (for example, by walking up stairs or hills, or by riding a stationary bicycle). A supervised workout with weights is another way to strengthen the leg muscles that support the knee. Avoid sudden changes in the intensity of exercise. Increase the force or duration of activity gradually. Wear shoes that both fit properly and are in good condition to help maintain balance and leg alignment when walking or running. Knee problems can be caused by flat feet or overpronated feet (feet that roll inward). People can often reduce some of these problems by wearing special shoe inserts (orthotics). Maintain a healthy weight to reduce stress on the knee. Obesity increases the risk of degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis of the knee. -- Exercises Three types of exercise are best for people with arthritis: Range-of-motion exercises help maintain normal joint movement and relieve stiffness. This type of exercise helps maintain or increase flexibility. Strengthening exercises help keep or increase muscle strength. Strong muscles help support and protect joints affected by arthritis. Aerobic or endurance exercises improve function of the heart and circulation and help control weight. Weight control can be important to people who have arthritis because extra weight puts pressure on many joints. Some studies show that aerobic exercise can reduce inflammation in some joints.

thanks all... i am in fact wearing an old pair of pumas when running. i've been meaning to correct that. i have extremely flat feet to begin with - and candles for legs - so i may need to take all of your advice. i'll slow down a little with the running until i've built up a little more leg strength. are treadmills easier enough on the knees to make a difference? userfriendly wrote: > <kreplech@gmail.com> wrote in message > news:1150846913.101308.53340@b68g2000cwa.googlegroups.com... > : hello all, > : > : i'm a new runner and i've been really happy with my progress over the > : course of the last month. i've gone from being a smoker barely able to > : run a mile to running almost 2 full 9 minute miles without walking. i > : am concerned about my knees. generally they only hurt for the first > : minute or so - just until i get used to the motion - but today, after > : having skipped 3 days of running for unrelated reasons, my knees hurt > : much worse and for about 5 minutes this time... is this going to > : progress? is there an easy fix? could it be that my knees are just achy > : and building strength? the pain is located on the inner portion of my > : knee, just behind the kneecap - is this a problem with my patela (sp?) > : - do i need those silly knee wraps with the holes in the middle? sorry > : for the bulk questions... thanks in advanced for any help! > : > : thanks again, > : krep > : > > Before you look into runner's knee, check your shoes. Krep, Sounds like "runner's knee". It is caused by weak quad muscles allowing the knee cap to move around too much. Google it and compare symptoms. If you have it you need to start a program of single leg presses to build the quads. It is very curable but it takes time. It must be treated or it will get worse with running. Sounds like a touch of chondromalacia (google it). If you try and soldier through it, it may get worse, and you'll have a long-term problem on your hands. In the meantime, ice works when I have a flare-up. I'd go to a podiatriast who treats a lot of runners. Ask around at a running club or running store for a referral. Sometimes, it's caused by abnormal motion of the foot, which causes the knee to twist slightly and the kneecap to move outside it's normal track. I had achy knees when I started running. Orthotics to stabilize my foot motion fixed the problem for me, although ymmv. Knee wraps, straps, etc, don't deal with the problem, imo. -- Dan

<kreplech@gmail.com > wrote in message news:1150846913.101308.53340@b68g2000cwa.googlegroups.com... is there an easy fix? 90% of the time, no. But you're in luck! Try competitive beach lying. Muscles become strong, from work outs, faster than tendons and bones. Vitamin D from the sun helps build bones. Now how to build tendons...
