Subject: knee cracks

Hi,

I have a problem that I can't really call a problem but I would like to know
what people think. Just to give you some background info, I have a run a
marathon with no major problems last November and I am a regular runner, 2-3
times a week.

Since then marathon and training period though, my left knee cracks, it just
happens when you don't expect it and I never had this before. I was
wondering if anyone had any similar experience (after heavy training) and
whether they had any problems afterwards. Is there any point going to see a
physio?

Thanks,

Panos, london.

My knees crack, but much less now than when I started running after a
period of inactivity. Pretty much every joint cracks, as it happens.
They don't hurt and I don't worry about them. Apart from...

...when I was a kid they used to say that cracking joint (knuckles,
mainly) would give you arthritis. Is this rubbish? If not, will our
cracking knees just sieze up some way down the road?

This is an unfounded myth as you imply. As is the old one that running
will give you arthritis of the knee. Use it or lose it.

Seems to confirm the previous posters' opinions.

the chiropractor i go to says that crack noises from joints is just a
buildup of gas in the joint being released, and is nothing to worry about. I
didnt think that your joints would have gas in them, but he said that if it
was bone rubbing together you would feel them grinding together. yuk.

As the joint moves different areas of pressure can mean dissolved gases
in the synovial fluid forming bubbles in areas of low pressure. The
forceful collapse of those bubbles can produce sound though I don't know
of any studies that have proved the idea.

Having suffered from bones grinding together in my hands I can attest
that it is indeed very yuk, as well as AAAARRRGGGHHH! I had to to have
the offending joints removed to stop the pain.
