Subject: is jeremy wariner making a mistake?

i am reading in the may issue of track and field news that jeremy wariner wants to do the michael johnson double(the 200 and 400 meters) at the 2008 olympics. my question is why would he want to run the 200 and 400 meters? frankly i do not see warnier having much of shot of even making 200 meter team when u have the likes of gatlin, crawford, spearmon and gay running the 200. i would much rather see warnier move up and run the 800 and possibly give the africans a competitive race which is something the american halk milers have not been able to do in quite a while. so who else agrees with me that warnier is making a mistake by running the 200?

he ran a 20.41 200m in highschool. michael johnson's best was 21.4. he has said he thinks he can go sub 20. in the last several weeks he's clocked a 20.59 & 20.37 (all in texas at meets). what's he say about his work outs? - ?It was really hot in Waco, about 95 degrees and with the humidity, it was really hot,? he said. The workout consisted of seven 200m repetitions in 27 seconds with 105 seconds rest in between. Just an hour before, Wariner said he concluded a grueling weight session. ?So it was a tough workout, particularly with the heat and humidity.? He said that his workouts are virtually identical to those of his mentor and manager, Michael Johnson, with one pivotal exception. ?He had less rest,? he said, explaining that Johnson had reached a training level that he and his training partners Williamson and Sanya Richards have yet to reach. Johnson would bounce back after six or seven minutes of rest between longer sprints of 250 or 300m; right now, Wariner is rewarded with eight. ?We?re just not ready for that yet. But other than that, I?m doing pretty much everything he did.? - Gay, Gatlin, & Spearmon? Ranked 1,2, & 3 in the world at 200m? Gatlin's not even ever gone sub 20. However I would rank Wariner right now, today as the 5th faster 200m USA runner behind the 3 bigs dogs & Xavier Carter. One edge I give him over all 200m runners worldwide. Wariner just wins, and I believe that means something when you're in the blocks. He expects to win and I think he's mentally tougher than all the sprinters worldwide. 800m? He would have no chance, he's doing the right thing...I give him 1/2 a chance.

On this newsgroup, I naturally figured you meant km or miles. I have no opinion. Has Wariner run the 800? Often, and/or well? That's gotta be a tough distance...

Often, and/or well? >That's gotta be a tough distance... The worst. 800m is just about the perfectly insane race. If you're a sprinter, it is far too long. If you're a distance guy, it's far too fast. It is, as former regular here Paul French put it, an exercise in pain management. If you can see straight at the finish line, you didn't run hard enough. I've raced every standard distance from 50 yards (which, I agree isn't precisely standard) to 50 km. 800 m is the single most brutal race. Others have either the benefit of brevity, or that you have to back off the intensity level. Somehow the long term creep of your body realizing that you're still out there, 2 hours after you started, and it doesn't like it, is not nearly as straightforwardly brutal as to start the 800 (insanely fast, hammering your body) and to hold that ludicrous pace, keep hammering away, as first small bears and then entire hillsides of bears tackle you. (Again, if you don't carry several for at least the last half lap, you're not running hard enough.) ... er, yes, 800m is what I'm currently working on. A guy who thinks of adding 200 to his 400 is toast for the 800. (Not that he wouldn't beat me at the 800, but this doesn't say much.) We had some discussion of the 800 vs. 400 a while back. After all, so one side went, MJ could loaf his way to a 50 second first lap, and then 'just' have to put in a second lap of same time to get his world record for the 800. But ... 800 is brutal, and specific. He'd need a major shift in orientation and preparation to go from 400/200 to 400/800. -- Robert Grumbine http://www.radix.net/~bobg/ Science faqs and amateur activities notes and links. On Saturday Wariner clocked in the 400 (Waco, Texas) a 44.12 This time is stunning, this early in the racing season. I think he's going sub 40 for sure.

no, this is a PR and by at least a full 1/10th of a second. i think he'll go sub 20 clean (no wind) this season at 200m.
