The usual advice is to always tell someone when you on a solo trip,
even if you expect it be short. I rarely follow this advice.

"A prominent Colorado adventure athlete can thank her dog and a Utah
search-and-rescue team for saving her life after she fell and injured
herself while running and spent two nights in subfreezing weather near
Moab last week.

Danelle Ballengee, 35, of Dillon, will have surgery today at Denver
Health Medical Center to repair a broken pelvis suffered while running
with her dog near the Amasa Back Trail south of Moab last Wednesday.

She also is recovering from severe frostbite on her feet, internal
bleeding and numerous cuts and bruises.

The two-time adventure racing world champion and elite triathlete,
trail runner and mountain biker slipped on a patch of ice on Hurrah
Pass and tumbled off three successive rock faces of 10 to 20 feet each.

... and she has kicked butt on the Mt. Baldy 50k, too...she ran that with
her arm in a cast! (on some *very* precarious and vertiginous trail above
the tree line)

That reminds me even more of Julie U. up here, which was an image that
came to mind when reading the article. She runs with her dog, is fast on
snowshoes and dirt alike (50k trail champ in 2005), but "injury" for her
is broken finger, broken hip, and I've forgotten what else.
