Munising Michigan July 29

Morning started out perfect 64 degrees, 7am start. Ferry ride to the Island
is a short 5 minute jaunt and the boat is loaded with 15+ states represented
for this true back-country marathon. 20 miles of single track and 6.2 miles
of dirt roads. 200 foot high sandstone cliffs, shaded, forests, and 2000+
feet of elevation change. Ouch.

First 5 miles unremarkable, nice views. Then, the thunderstorms hit. I'd
conservatively say we got 1-2" of rain over the next 3 hours. Rain rain
rain, sounds bad, but it kept the temps in the 60's the whole race. My
training allowed me only a couple 2 hour runs in preparation but I held on
for a decent finish. The last 10km was brutal. Slippery downhills caused
many to slip and fall, sprained ankles, one head injury with some good blood
on the face as he finished. I lost all glycogen stores and survived on guts
and goo. This was the second annual race, looking forward to #3 already.

Great Lakes Native American legend tells of a mighty spirit who would
whip up storms to drive white men off their sacred burial grounds.

Take the hint.

Funny, that same spirit brought out the sun at 11am, dried things up and
smiled down up on all finishers when they were done. Kinda like ...
congratulations. But, you are right, lots of Native American history in
this area and on this island.

Looks like a great course. Congratulations on a decent finish given few long
runs and a 3rd AG. That beach section looks tough - running on sand always
sucks the energy right out of me.

Sounds like a great run. My Brother-in-law and his family lives a mere 7
hours from there -- maybe I can make that next year.

24/264 overall, 3/27 age group. Not bad for a couple two-hour prep runs.

Cheers,
Craig

Three 50km nordic ski races this winter and a 90km ski race helped I"m sure.
I only run from April-ober so my skiing base helps me out with the longer
events in the summer.
