First major marathon winner who believes in nasal strips? Pretty
certain the winner is wearing Nike Zoom Air Katana Cage II shoes.
Only Nike runner I've ever seen in this shoe. I did a lot of training
in this shoe, thought it was a great flat....fyi, this is the first guy
to my knowledge to wear a nike shoe with the exposed "air bladder in
the heel.

Culpepper looks kind of "dorky" here, no?

http://www.ingnycmarathon.org/images/galleries/06MarathonEliteMen05.jpg

Ritz and Culpepper are from & train in the same exact place in
Colorado. Seems odd & clearly not congruent that Culpepper is
mummified up while Ritz is comfortable (no hat/arm warmers/gloves).
Ritz actually started the race in gloves but tossed'em. Those American
Nike runners....gotta wear & sell the Nike sunglasses of course...

Anyone actually have or wear a pair of these arm band things? I saw
lots of European runners with this stuff on, as well as the leg
versions that go from ankle to over the calf by bv sports or something
like that?

I tossed 2 my gloves about 1 minute before the start as my hands were
quite comfortable. I tossed my knit cap at about mile 2 as I sensed
comfort in that area, no regrets. I wore a singlet & shorts and was a
bit surprised to hear CP note he wore a short sleeve shirt & tights.
That the time the weather report had increased and it was possibly
going to hit the low 50's, not sure if it did, however I never felt
cold or underdressed in the race.

I realize runners from warmer climites might need to wear caps, etc.
throughout....but this Culpepper / Ritz contast is amusing because I
believe they literally grew up and still live in the same zip code in
Colorado....just blocks from each other.

Okay, am I compromising from having ideal gear if i don't have a pair
of these arm warmer things? This is one trend/look that I might just
have to sit out.

Culpepper's a freaking "dork" (like we used to say as kids).

1). Note his Nike sunglasses and how he wears them....on the Exterior
of his racing cap? WTF? He looks like a classic "dork". At least
Meb has them worn properly and on his ears and then w/cap over ears.

Culpepper looks like a slave to Nike to me in that he looks awkward &
unnatural in all that Nike garb. Ritz however looks kind of
cool....in that for example he's got on a necklace. It's rare to see
a runner wearing a necklace....but he's kind of got a tad of an edge in
his personality and a signature for indeed wearing a necklace in his
first marathon and the NYC Marathon.

I note this because I had a jewelry designer make me a necklace
specifically for running....that I've actually not ever yet worn. But
when I see one, like I do w/Ritz...I note it.

Gotta love the first American Male Gilmore
http://www.ingnycmarathon.org/images/galleries/06MarathonEliteMen15.jpg

Asics runner looking very regular (non-elite). You can buy the Asics
Professional Singlet tank for $30 or so at Eastbay....like all the
other Asics runners have on. Does Gilmore have on the official
uniform? No.....he just put on any 'ol singlet tank and won first
American. The powers that be at Asics have got to be wondering how in
the hell did their guy not have on their shit in full glory?

I don't know about dorky but without knowing he was an elite runner, he
would pass as the poster boy for Bulimia.

You sure you don't mean anorexia ? bulimics typically aren't any thinner than
anyone else.

Culpepper IMO looks just plain stretched, like a reflection in a bent mirror.
Even his head and neck look elongated.

Cyclists wear these all the time. The main advantage is that it's easy to
take them off and stuff them in the back of a bike jersey

Pro sports athletes have been wearing nasal strips for a few years, but
I think thats the first long distance runner I have seen wearing them.

Heck, he could pass for the poster itself.

Um, you may not have heard of her, but... Paula Radcliffe?

He always looks dorky to me. Guess his wife disagrees. Lucky guy!

Dude: just like we humans have different inherent leg speed and
different height and weight and different eye color and yadda yadda, we
also have different metabolisms and different "thermostats" and
preferences for and abilities to tolerate cold and heat.
