I posted a little while ago about my knees. While they did get better, I have a new and more terrifying problem. My left shin (specifically the the whole left part of the left shin) absolutely burns when I start to run. I can go no more than 1 mile without the pain being so bad I have to stop (normally I can 5-7 miles daily). Is this shin splints? Why only left side? Going to the well once again, thanks for any advice. This is getting extremely depressing. I waited months for the weather to get better in NYC and finally it does and this happens. Lyle

Possibly, but it's difficult to diagnose over the internet and "shin splints" is a generic term for a lot of different things. Burning pain can be symptom of many things and is generally not good. You might try backing off and RICE (rest-ice-compression-elevation) for short-term relief. Cross-training may help maintain fitness. Just my opinion, but I think you may have a case of "too much too soon", esp. if switching from tm to concrete without an adjustment period. > Going to the well once again, thanks for any advice. Just a thought, but you might take a look at the Injury Prevention for Runners and some of the other guides on this page. It's a fairly good collection of strengthening exercises. http://www.smiweb.org/massage_clinic/guides.html My gut feeling is that when your knee and shin stop hurting, something else will. Some strengthening exercises early on may be time well spent. Another thought, if you're running on roads anyway, doesn't NYC keep their roads or sidewalks reasonably snow/ice free during most of the winter, so you wouldn't have the ice problem that some others may have? There's a number of other runners in NYC in the group that seem to run year round outside with no problem - or maybe running on ice and not saying so. This would reduce the hazards of spring buildup. FWIW, tm vary in their surfaces, but I know at least some are softer than dirt trails so I'm sure are much softer than concrete and I would definitely allow time to adjust to harder surface. "Going to the well once again..." Unfortunatly, the well is mostly fecal matter and bad advice.
