A friend of mine had mentioned in the past that she had to submit expedition proposals to keep her North Face sponsorship. >From what I've heard, Dean is the only one running the 50, the rest of the athletes listed there are North Face sponsored ultra runners... Dean's past exploits have always had a charity tie-in, and I don't see how his Karno's Kids Foundation wouldn't reap benefits from this project. Then again its 190 days out or something?? Should be a lot more info as it gets closer, cool site though.

Good ol' Deanie boy never fails to think of something. Or was it his sponsors at the north face. "the mission ... encourage, motivate and inspire people of all ages to become active, make physical wellness an essential and enjoyable priority in their lives and to promote healthy, active living across this great country." Hoped to see a word or two about charity in there... He's even going to AK "mayor's midnight sun marathon" 2nd, and low-and-behold it will finish with the NYCM. There's even a team doing this apparently, with Nikki Kimball as a team member. Ok be warned; now for the semi-political commentary. (I'm just in that mood today). Well it sounds like fun I suppose, but the mission statement is pretty lame. Dare I reveal my bias by altering it to ".. this once great country". What people need to be more active is less mexican day laborers to blow their leaves and mow their lawns, and more time off for recreation from their rat-wheel hyper-consumerized diminished-wage entertainment-programmed lives. There has never been a fatter or lazier young generation than the current one, and it tells you something (me at least) -- how well programmed they are to the extent that they want exactly what the corporatocracy wants them to want in their life -- that they apparently trust (perhaps, hopefully, only until recently) the Bush administration over the media. I'm no fan of the corporate-owned media, but when a large segment of society would rather not know, would rather be blissfully ignorant, you know something is very wrong and that it will eventually explode. -Tony

The Mayor Marathon in Anchorage will be difficult to do since it is held in JUNE not ober, but hey they could just be running the course, but they better get permission from the US Army to cross the rifle range. Since they're running it closer to the fall equinox, I was kinda surprised (in a perverted way ;) ) they didn't try for the Equinox marathon - or at least the route. Mayor's definitely has easier in/out logistics for this type event though. Someone that's talked with Dean at one of his book signings said that Dean said that, yes, it's just the course, and someone from the company is contacting all the RD's to get the layouts and whatever. Sounds like he's just running them without having to deal with the logistics himself. Have you found any ice-free hills to run? Although this wind is definitely changing the situation. Dot -- Instead of blindly accepting standard approaches to workouts, study yourself carefully, noting how you respond to various kinds of work. Patterns of training which produce your strongest running and create your greatest excitement for the sport will be the ones which help you achieve your goals, even though they may be far different from conventional training practices. - Owen Anderson

I got to see him this week when he passed through town on a booksigning tour. Other than appearing more weathered than the book jacket picture, he seems to be a fairly ordinary guy. He didnt seem to have any special stamina secrets other than an iron will. HIs spiel echoed what he wrote in the book.
