"The White ~ Throated Sparrow There is much plaintive softness in their note, which I wish, kind reader, I could describe to you; but this is impossible, although it is yet ringing in my ear, as if were in those very fields where I have so often listened to it with delight. No sooner in their music over than they return to the field, and thus continue alternately sallying forth and retreating during the greater part of the day. As the approach of night, they utter a sharper and shriller note, consisting of a single twit repeated, in smart succession by the whole group, and continuing until the first hooting of some owl frightens them into silence. Yet, often during fine nights, I have heard the little creatures emit here and there utn'it, as if to assure each other that 'all's well.'" ~ From Introduction, "John J. Audubon's Guide: The Birds of the Northeast" [p. 122] http://www.rare-prints.com/book_store.htm ~ * ~

FLOWERING DOGWOOD Species Cornus florida Family: Cornaceae Longevity: Perennial Season: Cool Origin: Native Height: 25 ft. Fruits: Fall "A small understory tree with a spreading, irregular crown. Common in moist soil of bottomlands and uplands. The leaves, when gently pulled apart (split in two), demonstrate a silk-like venation similar to a spider's web. The flowers are subtended by large, showy, white, petal-like bracts, commonly mistaken as the flower. Fruits are red, maturing in the fall. The bark is rough, broken into small square blocks. Often planted as an ornamental because of its showy bracts and fall foliage." ~ The Noble Foundation http://www.noble.org/imagegallery/Woodhtml/FloweringDogwood.html ~ * ~

~ * Audubon's Long Island Sound Campaign Lifeline to An Estuary in Distress ... "When Adrian Block first entered the Long Island Sound estuary in the early 1600's, he discovered an unbelievably rich ecosystem teeming with birds, fish and wildlife. Today, the viability of this fragile ecosystem hangs in the balance. Intense development pressure, recreational demands, and various commercial and industrial enterprises are taking a heavy toll. In response, Audubon Connecticut, Audubon New York and Audubon's National Policy Office have joined forces to help restore and protect Long Island Sound and its watershed." WatchList species are those facing population declines and/or threats such as habitat loss on their breeding and wintering grounds, or with limited geographic ranges. A centerpiece of conservation at Audubon, the WatchList is a science-based system that focuses attention on at-risk bird species so that limited resources are spent where they are most needed." Quantum Quoof's Sad Bat ... Fruit of the Cranberry Tree The Quantum Quoof ate, But her friend you would not know, For Beaver's Mint was Bat's Fate. The Cranberry Tree flowered a lovely red, Mourning Glory and Beaver's Mint on every side. Together sat, Quantum Quoof and Sad Bat; Quantum Quoof laughed but Sad Bat cried. "You're my best friend," Quantum Quoof sighed. "And you, mine," Quantum Quoof's Sad Bat replied. Blissfully they shared every afternoon at three Watercress canap=E9s with Crumpets and tea. Vintage of Cranberry Knowledge Quantum Quoof drank, But not Bat, who knew too much, who wished to forget, For Beaver's Mint was Sad Bat's Fate. But together sat Quantum Quoof and Sad Bat; Quantum Quoof quacked while Sad Bat cried, Mourning Glory and Beaver's Mint on every side.
