Subject: Went swimming today. How do i combine swimming and running?

For some reason i dont like biking but swimming seems pretty neat. How many miles should I swim if im a very serious athlete with running as my first priority? What type of swimming would be best? Im 42 and seem prone to overuse injuries. i guess i run too fast and too long and too frequently even though i only run ever second day. ive got some pain along my shins , very borderline. im only running 30 minutes. i hate to say it but i really need two days between runs , it seems. i need to be able to run 60 minutes by end of april.

Depends on how serious you are, but: (1) if running is your first priority, do as much running as possible (meaning whatever you can do without getting injured) (2) if that leaves you with less than about 12 hours a week of training time, add as much cross training as possible > What type of swimming would be best? Im 42 and seem I don't think it matters too much. > prone to overuse injuries. i guess i run too fast and too long and too > frequently even though i only run ever second day. ive got some pain How do you know that all three of these things are problems ? If I were a betting man, I'd say you'd get on top of your problems by slowing down your training runs. Doing longer training runs may actually help, because that will force you to slow down to a pace that you can comfortably sustain for an hour or so. If completing a 1 hour run at your current training pace is difficult, your pace is much too fast. So I'd suggest slowing down, and gradually *increasing* your longest training run until you're up to 60 minutes, then increase your other runs to 40 minutes, and then increase your training frequency first to 4x, 5x, then 6x/week. I'd suggest increasing total weekly training time by about 10% every 3 weeks. So: week1 : 30,30,40 week4 : 30,30,50 week7 : 30,30,60 Cheers, -- Donovan Rebbechi http://pegasus.rutgers.edu/~elflord/

You've taken a big step by admitting you have a problem. Fortunately help is available: http://tinyurl.com/e22m6 If you have any additional questions there is no need to use code words such as "lactic burn" of the right hand or "overdevelopment" of the right arm. We're all adults and understand your situation. > i guess i run too fast and too long and too > frequently even though i only run ever second day. ive got some pain > along my shins , very borderline. im only running 30 minutes. i hate to > say it but i really need two days between runs , it seems. i need to be > able to run 60 minutes by end of april. Are you an American and planning to run from the IRS in April? Running 60 minutes won't help. I recommend you save yourself problems and embarassment and just pay up like the rest of us.

Thanks for the comprehensive answer. I only run 1 hr 45 min per week so that leaves lots of time for cross training. I'll try running slower for 40 minutes to see what happens. Running too fast is a distinct possibility . I really get up for a run and get bored running slow. I even seem to have to swim fast. Never swam since 15 yrs old but i was really swimming fast yesterday. I got a charlie horse in my calf while swimming fast.

Consider getting running shoes. Get them from a running shoe specialty store, and places like FOOT LOCKER are NOT that kind of store. Try just mixing in some easy runs, where easy is defined as running at a pace where you can carry on a conversation without gasping your sentences. Run with a friend and talk to each other to force you to stay at a good slow pace.. Only guessing that swimming might be useful in building aerobic capacity. So maybe doing long swims, in the range of your runtimes (30minutes) might help. Where are the triathletes? any comments? Ed

I find swimming really useful in building a variety of leg muscles--I'm convinced that as a result my knees are better supported and less prone to injury. I swim with a master's group with a coach for an hour and a half three times a week. We almost always do 20 minutes or so of kicking (not using our arms) wearing fins, which both stretches and strengthens the legs. Backstroke kick to some extent and even more so butterfly kick are very good for strengthening core muscles. We also regularly do breaststroke or just breaststroke kick (no fins), which uses a whole different set of leg muscles. When I was increasing my long runs a little faster than was wise, building up to doing a half marathon in February, I sometimes swam gently after running because it seemed to stretch out everything that was sore from running. Pam who is happy because I ran my 3 miles today at a pace of just under 12 minutes a mile

I suspect that crosstraining is more important than people say. Right now i only run 2 hrs per week and that is my only exercise.

ok, i will try to swim frequently. i think taking 2 days off after or before a long run is soemthing i will have to do. I try not to use my legs so much when swimming. I really have a weak core and upper body. Swimming works for me because there are people around and it stimulates me to try to look good by going fast etc.. Weightlifting at home does not always work. just like brushing teeth . i never seem to have the motication. thanks for the good input
