Subject: Ways to Measure Physical Improvment

I am starting a project school and I am implementing a running program for me and a few of my friends that have volunteered that is a good mix of speed and distance that I got off of coolrunning.com, anyway, I need a few more ways to measure physical improvement for this project before the program starts in a few weeks. Right now the only ways I am measuring improvement is recording resting heart rate (daily), blood pressure (daily), weight (daily), and body fat % every 30 days (this is a 90 day study). I was wondering if there were any other tests I could use to measure the physical benefits of running that wouldn't cost me hundreds in blood tests or anything like that. Please keep in mind this is a class focusing on physical fitness, so I will only be measuring the physical benefits of running.

This is because weight change might not show the simutaneous change of losing fat but gaining muscle. (I see you have %body fat. Do you have equipment to measure it or are you just using a pinch test?) How about lung capacity? (a simple how long can you hold your breath test?? ) how about heart conditioning? How much does the heart rate drop once exercise ends? (dang! what's the name of that test??) How about directly related running tests? Top speed for 100Meters? Change in speed for a 5K? indirect benefits: changes in weight lifted for leg press for example? Heart stress test (need a trained professional for that. You didn't mention what school, Highschool or college. Likely not a good choice for a highschool project.) maybe a variation like increase in heart rate between bottom and top of a set of stairs would be safe and obviously a benefit. HTH, ed

The subjects were tested every couple of weeks, similar to a race situation. Make sure that the tests are always equal or they are worthless. John

Life Fitness treadmills have a submaximal VO2 test facility that just requires a compatible heart rate monitor. Or there's the Cooper Test http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooper_test which it says correlates to VO2 Max http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VO2_max Obviously you'll get 101 opinions on the usefulness of these tests but they have to be more use than subjective estimation which worryingly many people seem to think is the only method.
