Subject: Watches similar to Casio SDB-300W?
|
I looked through lots of watch threads out there without luck. Does anybody know if Casio makes a watch with the features of the old SDB-300W? - 30+ lap memory (multiple days stored with best lap and average lap for each run) -multiple beep alarms for the stopwatch (you could set them to go off at your target split times in a race) - Decent buttons, and a countdown timer. The memory features and the stopwatch beep alarms are what I miss the most. I bought the last 300Ws I could find about 10 years ago. Any help appreciated!

When it died I bought a Timex which kept 100 splits thinking I would need that many for some of my races. I soon discovered the Timex was a big pain in the ass, like driving a stretch Hummer four blocks to by a loaf of bread. When the Timex died I went looking for 300W and it's simplicity. I found the STR101 2401 and it was about $30 and very much like the 300W, with big numbers by the way. I took a quick look at the Casio web page and I didn't see that model or if they made a newer version with at different stock number. While mine is working flawlessly I wish I had bought a spare so if and when this one dies, I would not need to do what you are doing. ;) If you do find the replacement model please post back here. The old 330W was always listed in the ad section in RunnerWorld and maybe Running Times but I don't read those rags anymore. -Doug

Thanks Doug, I'll let you know if I find anything with the same features. Almost EVERYONE in my running club had had a 300W back in the late 80s/early 90s - can't believe there still isn't a market. Mine and friends' have worked just fine - I destroyed one trying to change the battery, true, and while I do partially blame the watch for being a bit too delicate and fiddly, they do recommend having a jeweler do it. Which'd be no worse than Polar, with their non-user-replaceable battery. The one I wrecked had HRM, which I used once. Was delighted to discover that one without HRM costs only about thirty bucks at the regular price (the HRM, I paid more than that for an older model on clearance) and has the one feature I wanted on the old watch: simultaneous display of both (mile) split time and total time. But hey, we're just talking about utilitarian watches here: yawn. Not something sexy, like shoes.

I come here and find out I've been missing out horribly all along, and if some twenty year old Casio were affixed to my wrist it'd just be >>* That Much Better *<<. Thanks for NUTTIN', fellas. P.S. What'd happen if you had the 80's Casio on one wrist, a Garmin with GPS and HR and convection MW on the other, and the Nike Ipod gizmo on your shoe or down your shorts or wherever it goes? Would they cancel out or would you die of sheer ecstasy?

I've had several and every single one of the bastard things have stopped working at least once during what I'd call normal life for a consumer product, ie - AFTER the "free replacement unit" period and again just after the warranty period (3 outa 4, including the truly sexy VO2 Rush ladies' watch, which I bought for my daughter's birthday and which dropped dead 4 months later) - just after warranty period (the Garmin/Timex GPS runners thing). The only watches I had very little shit with are the Polar HRM arm units (same goes for mobile phones BTW - thank all your Gods that Finland didn't get swallowed by the URSS after The War; hi anders ;-)

When it does finally die I may have to stop running altogether. The watch is 10+ years old and has outlived three watch straps and maybe 2 batteries. As with all things running the manufacturers seem to strategize "Everybody loves it?! Well we must change it or discontinue it! Who wants everybody loving our products?" Andy
