The Olympic 100 m guys (and girls) look like goddamm bodybuilders in the
upper body--and of course in the lower.
Clearly they do some bou cou weight lifting--or so it seems.
Any idears on their training regimen? Heavy, or moderate for reps, or very
light for speed, power?

Is developing the upper body that important to sprinters?
Or does it just give a bit of an edge, so they build up the upper body on
their off-running days?

Yes, they get that build from a combination of weight lifting, and a lot of
fast twitch muscle (which gains size easily)

A lot of explosive work, mostly lowish reps. Reasonably heavy weights.

Depends. 0.01 seconds is important in an olympic level 100m sprint.

Some of them are in the weights room every day though not necessarily upper body.

Not sure about that, you've got these two great sprinters for example

Put them next to a 300lb bodybuilder and see how they look ...

They have great muscle definition, but they are nowhere near as big.

The guys I've seen on TV were quite a bit more muscled than these pics, but
still they are impressive.
True, I was being hyperbolic about the BBer comparison, but still, that's
some upper body for dewds who would seem to be using mainly their legs.
But if that upper body strength gives a competitive edge, then I guess it's
mandatory. I thought such upper body training might *detract* from more
productive lower-body training.

Carl Lewis seemed to be one of the skinnier guys, but even he was impressive
and sinewy throughout.

Let's not forget the steroids.

If they were 250lb at 5'9", I'd attribute it to steroids, but most of them
aren't very big (more like 180lb -- if they get too big it hinders them). It's
a huge exaggeration to say they look like bodybuilders.

It's simply off base for the average person to try to get that build by
training like a sprinter. Most people would have a much better chance of
getting the same looks (albeit with much slower sprint times) via a
conventional bodybuilding program.

He's built but not even close to "pro bodybuilder" big.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I've seen lots of spinters up close
and personal and lots of them look "near body builder range" (upper
body) and sometimes lower.

Look at this photo of Donovan....you gonna tell me that's not
"somewhere near body builder range"?

http://www.sporting-heroes.net/files_athletics/BAILEY_D_19950806_GH_L.jpg

Of course it is.

How about Tyson Gay & Terrence Trammell & Shawn Crawford?

http://tinyurl.com/y6uyoa

These guys are not doing all the tricks & techniques to make their
veins pop, etc. that bodybuilders do....but when you see body builders
in "down-mode"...they don't look like they do in show-mode. These
sprinters clearly qualify as "near body builder range" upper body,
which was the OP.

Sure is. Just a question of extremes. This sort probably can't run very

Unless by "bodybuilder" you mean the average guy in the gym, they're all
bigger than sprinters. Here's a picture of Dexter Jackson, who is one of
the "little guys" in pro bodybuilding.

Compare them side by side to this guy:

http://www.bbcenter.sk/images/gallery/muzi/paul_dillet/dillet05.jpg

Dillet's arms look bigger than the legs on these guys.

Bodybuilders are *bigger* in "down mode". They drop 30-40 pounds in crash
dieting and dehydration to get to show mode.

Back when the US nation meet was in Sacramento alot, of course, we used
to go all the time. One year we had front row seats for the 100m final
and the 400 m final. in the 100m's Some (emphasis on some) were
outright huge while others were in the big and well definded range. It
was a little different in the 400m. for instance Michael Johnson was
pretty darn ripped, however, I wouldn't say he was big (although much
bigger than any distance runner. The difference between a 400m runner
and a 800m runner is alot.) point is most are not anywhere near body
builder range.

I was agreeing with you that sprinters look like some bodybuilders - but
not extreme types, example provided.

The photo was just the first pair of "bodybuilder who certainly couldn't
run well" thighs which I found on Google. No idea what colour he is
(doesn't look black to me) and anyway, believe it or not, I think the
black guys generally look better.

You should be thankful I didn't post the first "lady" bodybuilder whose
photo I found :-P

Sprinters build up their upper bodies mostly for symmetry. Gigantic
thighs, and a weak chest would make them look as goofy as they act.

I said most. "lots" could be viewed as outliers. My example refered to
the top US sprinters
