Subject: Unwritten rules

If you live in the USA and have a TV set you know the world series is
going on (Tigers and Cardinals). Games 2 has been under suspect because
the tigers starting pitcher (Kenny Rogers) had something on his hand.
Many believe it was pine tar because it helps in cold weather, but he
denies it. Most baseball people say its ok, because its one of the
unwritten rules that pitchers can use pine tar in cold weather.

It got me thinking, what are the unwritten rules (if there are any) of
running racing for track, CC, marathons, and road running?

Then you should be right at home in trails races Lance. It is very
common to see a person, male for female, just a few feet away taking a
potty break. I tend to ignore them but it could a perk for you. See one,
you see them all! ;)

you're refencing breaking the rule of law, but that's overlooked, in
road racing. most rules in the usa comply w/usatf regs. i'll give
you one we can all relate to & connect it to the elites w/an example.

i'll be behind a guy who at the water table/station attempted a snatch
but missed and had no more chances at the particular water station.
if i see that and i'm behind that runner, often I'll snatch on the fly
and speed up a step or two and hand the cup to the guy (or woman) that
missed. we all do this. it's illegal.

about 5 years ago in the elite women's field in the NYC Marathon....I
forget the circumstances as to how, but one of the women during the
race mid-way at a water stop recieved a cup of water...handed to her
from another runner. this was a big issue on the TV broadcast as I
watched as it's illegal. I can't recall who it involved....they may
have in fact gone on to win. I don't think it was one of the African
women......and it was not Marla Runyun who legally is blind and I think
thus is allowed to be handed a cup of water whilst running from
another runner and not breaking the rules due to her blindness. in
this case the woman was not DQ'ed, the RD simply "looked the other way"
and let it go.

Spring based shoes are illegal....but no one's ever one a race in a
pair. Electronic headphone based devices are illegal. However now
there's an array of devices that give you feedback through your
headphones and or wrist device. I've never understood the
distinction between receiving data/feedback through your ears or
through your eyes (glancing at your wrist device).

Today techincally a runner can be informed through their wrist
technology of conditions ahead and prepare/adjust accordingly from a
coach or spotter to devise strategy accordingly. It's all illegal but
can be done.

Scott Jurek, Ultra SuperStar & Champion routinely breaks their rules
with his ice bath (in the middle of the race). Other Ultra superstars
routinely break rules when they take breaks in the middle of races and
enter cars, suvs, and vans, and sit/rest in the air conditioned
concealed environment. They basically create a "mobile cooling
chamber" for the runner's break. No one calls them on these
violations that are common in hot ultra races.

Pee'ing outside is usually illegal in most parts, but it's done all the
time and no one cracks down on this. It's kind of understood when you
gotta go, you gotta go. I actually enjoy catching women having to go
on the fly on the side of the road.

In a very early LA marathon, I rode a bike with the lead pack of runners
(won in 2:12 on a much hillier course than present). When done with the
squeeze bottle, they'd offer the rest to others in the pack, sometimes it
would go to 3 runners. I remember seeing early NY marathons on TV back in
the Salazar era and the same thing went on, as I recall.

Always look like a prancing cupcake?

I'm assuming this is an unwritten rule............cuz you all do.
