The week following surgery I rode a stationary recumbent bike a few times. My first run was two weeks after surgery. My arm was still in a sling for my first several runs. I made sure to run on even surfaces because the thought of a fall frightened me. That week I ran 15 miles. The following week I was back to 30 miles per week. I was back to normal(running wise) soon after, and since have completed a half marathon and a marathon. I am now 6 months since surgery and the shoulder isn't perfect yet, but it is better than it was prior to surgery. It no longer affects me running. Good luck with your shoulder.....I hope your recovery is quick and complete. Rob

My shoulder re-hab was really delayed by 6 weeks as a result. Even then, full range of motion only returned after about 3 months, and I still would get shooting pains if I lifted my arm in just-the-wrong way for a year after the accident. I had been running 80+ km/week (leading into a marathon), and normally averaged 50-60. When I started running again (about two weeks into the shoulder physical therapy), I was able to manage 3-5 km two or three times a week for a couple of months. Whenever I got impatient with the progress and went up to, say 10-15 km my shoulder would throb and swell for the next three or four days. That said, patience and persistence pay off. I have been back to the full distances since early 2005. However, in the meantime I have only been able to shed a stone of the stone and ten I put on during my recuperation (age, don't you know). BK

Posted and emailed since it's been a while. How >long did you wait until you returned to running? Subject line says surgery, but message says injury. Those are different questions. I've torn both rotator cuffs in recent years. The right only interrupted my running for the few days it took the main pain to come down. Once I could sleep through a night and walk without it screaming at me, I could run with it. Didn't feel good running, but it wasn't worse while running than while sitting or walking. This more or less healed in about 3 months of rehabilitative exercise, and I raced a 10k PR towards the end of those 3 months. The left tore in such a way that I couldn't run at all until it had repaired, again about 3 months of exercise. Neither one needed surgery. A runner friend has had shoulder surgery for a rotator cuff tear and, iirc, was running again in less than 3 months. Tears without surgery seem to be fairly common, with people often continuing to run through the rehabilitation period (as I did when I nailed the right). Some, like my left, are unrunnable. But this seems to be rare for non-surgical tears. -- Robert Grumbine http://www.radix.net/~bobg/ Science faqs and amateur activities notes and links.
