Well I lied. I said I had run my last race until I turn sixty back in November but cirmcumstances put me within geographic striking distance of another race and I could not resist. This was my first time to run the 25th annual Pass to Bay Christmas 10K sponsored by the Gulf Coast Running CLub, a very well run club that puts on a lot of races. The race was, until this year, a one way prom Pass Christian, MS to Bay St. Louis, MS across the bay bridge. Unfortunately due to Katrina, the bay bridge is no more, so the race course was altered to an out and back along scenic drive in Pass Christian and some of the back roads. Flat, fast, cool, humid ( a good thing when it is cool) and a very friendly group of folks. Living on the Gulf Coast until the 1980's, and having made several trips back just after Katrina, I was eager to see the build back progress. Unfortunately it is almost non existent on the beach highway. I had a good race. A PB for a 10K at 47:38, second in 55-59 AG and 26th overall in a field of 110. Seems like the race is smaller than in the past, probably a Katrina impact. But it was a fun race and I'll be back next year. I had not run for four days before this race and had a PB that was over two minutes better than my last 10K run back in May. Maybe that should be a strategy. Frank

Nice race, Frank! Congrats. Frank Boettcher wrote: > What I did manage was picking up a pace group in the race. Hey - best of luck in the new AG! Does that happen pretty soon?

Does that happen pretty soon? Thanks. Jan 29. I'm still in the improving phase,(started running late forties, overweight and out of shape) i.e. new PB's each year. Don't know how long that will last, but I hope at least through 60-64. Frank

I was grumbling all week as one thing after another kept me from running. I normally just take the day before the race off. What I did manage was picking up a pace group in the race. They were probably running slightly faster than I wanted to run but I decided to try to stay with them. A couple, a man pacing his wife (she ended up as masters winner, he 2nd in 45-49, and two thirteen year old twin girls (who where first and second overall female). About the end of mile four they opened up a 25-50 second gap on me but I kept them in sight. I think that helped me much more than the time off which was probably a nuetral factor. Frank

Wow, congrats Frank on the PB and second AG! Looks like it was good you didn't resist! Maybe a good taper is what you need for a 10K PB? Sorry to hear the Katrina fixing is still so slow. You'd think in the USA things like this would get fixed a lot more quickly. Thanks for the report! I thought it was great, however, when you train hard and have a higher expectation, it's tough. guess it has cooled down out there, and conditions are a bit more comfortable. That delay with the Katrina recovery is not because of the spirit of the people. A combination of building code change confusion and cloudiness regarding future insurability have locked things up in a lot of areas. Frank >Frank Boettcher wrote: > >> >> Well I lied. Yes, very much so, it was 29F this morning and will only get up to the low 50's today. But supposed to get a bit warmer this weekend (say +10F or so). But not hot anymore! > That delay with the Katrina recovery is not because of the spirit of > the people. I wasn't thinking it was the folks there, but more the red tape sort of things. I can see where uncertainty over getting some insurance would hold things up.
