Subject: Questions for the group, how should this guy rehab/recover??

This really happened this week with a running friend of mine. Read on:

A running friend, who had a streak of running for over 5 years straight,
had arthroscopic surgery Wednesday morning to remove a tear of the medial
meniscus in the knee, and smooth out the surfaces. He had been hobbling
around for over 4 months, before deciding to have the surgery. He ran the
morning of the surgery, then was relatively pain-free the next day, so
despite the repeated advice of numerous running friends to "Stop The
Streak," decided to try anyway on Thursday, writing the following day:

"Today will be my first day missed in 5.5 years. I ran yesterday and my
leg hurts like hell since. Live and learn."

The question to the group is: Have you, or do you know of other runners
who have attempted to run the day after arthroscopic surgery of the knee?
Did they cause any long-term damage in doing this, or did the pain
eventually subside? Did anyone continue to run every day after this type
of surgery, or were the body's pain signals overwhelming in forcing you
to stop?

Officially, to keep a running "Streak" going, you have to run at least 1
mile, without assistance of crutches, etc.

For those who did it right, what was the best amount of time to take off
from running after arthroscopic surgery? What were the best alternative
exercises (cross training) during the recovery phase? How slowly did you
come back? Did you eventually recover completely?

The most famous example is Joan Benoit (Samuelson), who had arthroscopic
knee surgery 3 weeks before the U.S. Olympic Trials, but did lengthy
aerobic arm exercises, and was able to return to running in time to
qualify for the Olympic Marathon.

I hope someone here on the newsgroup can suggest ways for this guy to
rehab/recover so that he doesn't do permanent damage to his knee, and undo
the good the surgery was supposed to accomplish!

This guy sounds more boneheaded than any of us rec.running regulars, myself
included, and that's quite an achievement. Congrats, I guess, to him for
that.

I can't help with any info about coming back after arthroscopic knee
surgery, but I can suggest that this sort of question will usually get at
least a few serious respondents on the letsrun.com forum, with its
relatively large and diverse cast of characters. Good luck.

Stop spamming other forums here. Besides, those responses over there
are me.
