It's about proper running form and style. If you follow the work of Nicholas Romanov and his POSE Technique or you use Danny Dreyer's ChiRunning, you can run barefoot or in racing flats. The reason being is that you land on the surface of the earth and don't clomp with your body driving your joints and body through the earth's surface. The small quick steps teach you to land on the surface. The vertical lift is minimized Google "gontang" and "running form" and you can read some of my thoughts and ideas that parallel the work of Dreyer and Romanov, Gordon Pirie, and Hal Higdeon's track coaches. I think that the sweet spot for shoes is somewhere between the $150 dollar range and a ten dollar pair at Zellers (whatever that is). This has been my experience at least. Good Luck, James

Do not forget some of those African guys are still competing at world level bare foot - no shoes no cost. IMO all these Hi Tech shoes encourage/compensate for bad running form. Take your shoes off and do some running on soft surfaces to allow your body to learn how nature intended you to run. Unfortunately 50% of the time I change brand of shoes, they new ones dont work for me properly, and I have to try a third brand. That seems to be one the hazards of running gear I have to live with. I've been buying running shoes for running for 29 years. I observe that a model is discontinued or significantly changed on the average in 3-5 years, so this requires looking for a new brand. I also had to change once for an injury problem. I'm frugal too, but learned to distinguish the cheap athletic shoe imitations from the one that work. The fakes with be made out of single piece soles or uppers. These either dont protect ones joints well or wear out quickly and list at $40 or less.
