I had to stop because of shin splints and a pain in my upper quad near hip. I have no idea how much i should run on my maiden run. I had been running 40 minutes. I have been doing toe raising exercise. and lots of cross training.

"I have no idea how much i should run on my maiden run." Just keep jogging until I tell you to stop, buttercup.

One thing about them that I noticed is that they would let me do things to a point. I started going to the part and jogging on the grass. Its not the same but I would break a sweat and not gain too much weight. I also would ride a bike as much as I could. I didn't experince any pain on the bike but others have told me that they couldn't ride with shin splints. Also simulated running in the pool (if you have one nearby) is a good way to try and maintain alittle. But like Ed mentioned change shoes, where you run, and anything else that might have contributed to this. On the shoes, look at the shoes that you wear to work, that you do yard work in, go to church in (if you do that), etc. Those might be slowing down the healing process.

(old/bad shoes, overtraining, whatever) If you don't know what caused it, you are likely to repeat the mistake. If you did remove that problem source, then after only one month off (you healed fast), I think you could just drop back some. Try something like 20mintes at about 75% of you previous training pace. Mixing some walking into it wouldn't hurt. Certainly stay away from race pace for a few weeks. And just listen carefully to your body. If there is trouble brewing, your body will sound warnings. Otherwise, just relax. Enjoy a nice easy run. Ed

I'm about 99% certain that this is the same individual as seatosummit28@yahoo.com Same story about shin splints, quad and cross-training. In the posting history: same pathetic garbage about the same topics in the same newsgroups.

I think hiking was the main thing that slowed down the healing. I now know that I cannot run very much without being injuried. I need to stick around 6 kms and increase slower than glacier pace. Thanks for the help:) runsrealfast wrote: > nosugarintea@yahoo.com wrote: > > I had to stop because of shin splints and a pain in my upper quad near > > hip. My physiotherapist just said shin splints are an overuse injury. I do get them when I increase my mileage. I have good running shoes and run on soft surface. I spent at least 20 yrs as a sedentary type person so maybe that is why it is taking me so long to learn to run. I do several cross training activities now. Thanks for the advice. You may be right. He's done: 88 posts in 10 groups in ober, but nothing before that. Posting from a free Yahoo account. posting a fast response, calling you names. He's got two strikes against him, will he strike out as a troll? tune in next time...

Anybody who spreads insidious misconceptions like you will always be at the bottom of the evil barrel.
