Subject: Dang knee is starting to bother me

I know I pronate and my alignment is off from a childhood femur
fracture. Now at age 42, I'm starting to "feel" my left knee when I
run and sometimes suddenly it will not feel right, and more noticeable
on downhills. Not yet to pain level, just a weird sensation that makes
me want to immediately stop what I'm doing. I've even had it kick up
recently on the elliptical machines at the gym. If I get through a 5
mile run, that knee will now keep me from running for 2 or 3 days
afterward.

So probably the prescription is to go to a sports medicine specialist,
I know that. Hah, more painful to try and navigate those waters with
our HMO system.

One self-medicating treatment I was thinking is just a combination of
some intentional stretching exercises and some better shoes for
pronation. Any sense in trying glucosamine/chondroitin? Those things
are horse pills!

Tnxxxx for any expertise or suggestions.

That is helpful, i'll add it to my library (small library). From the
looks of that doc it looks like R&R and ice is the best treatment,
although better shoes couldn't hurt.

Ran a trail this past Tuesday. Had never run it before. It split into 2
directions: Ho and Hie-Di-Ho. I took Hie-Di-Ho. Kept going up fairly
steeply. After a mile- not knowing where I was- I turned around and came
down and then took the low trail (Ho). Wound-up with a 5-miler or so. Felt
good. Showered and went to an evening meeting.

When I got up to leave the meeting, my right knee was screaming in pain.
Apparently, I'd pissed off my knee by doing the hill. I haven't been able
to run since then. Even going up and down the stairs at my house is
painful. Can bend my knee back to do a quad stretch. Unfortunately, I have
the RNR Half-Marathon this next weekend. I was gonna taper a bit, but this
is ridiculous.

Trails may be fun, but that doesn't guarantee injury-free. Oh, by the way-
I cross-train as well. I cycle (except for times like now, when my knee is
so screwed there's no chance of it...).

Sorry, make that- "Can't bend my knee back to do a quad stretch..."

Thanks John.

I found this which looks to be quite helpful:

I think try the shoes first. That would be much less expensive that
going to a dor even if you have insurance. Another idea might be to
work days off into your training.

I'm sure they'd rather sell me the shoes at Marathon Sports. ;-)

For now I think I'll take a few days off. Funny you start out doing
this and it becomes something that is hard to stop! I find myself kind
of obsessing about not doing it if I'm not, but my knee is telling me
"whoa" so I guess I'd better listen!

Thanks again,

Chuck
