Even though I calibrated my ipod, I'm not sure I trust it. Suffice to say, I'm probably not much faster than that either! I have a history of recurrent injuries. I was a regular runner before (longest distance was half marathon noncompetively and 10 miler competitively), but then got injured about five years ago. I kept getting injured every time I try again. I haven't tried in two years... I just gave up for awhile. If I get injured again, I might just have to reconcile myself to walking only... but walking just doesn't do it for me like running does... you know what I mean, don't you? Once you get the bug... ! jen

Suffice to > say, I'm probably not much faster than that either! Oh, but who > cares. :-) I bought a new HR monitor the day after I finished the C to 5K; all I had wanted was a multiple-zone monitor. REI had the Garmin 301 marked down (maybe it was the manufacturer's markdown; I don't know) to $299, plus as an REI member, I get a rebate at the end of the year, so I bought it, primarily because the iPod was not giving me accurate results. The Garmin is telling me that my pace is just under 14. I'm going to use today's race to try to recalibrate the iPod. All I have to do is remember to press the buttons on the iPod and the Garmin at the same time when I cross the start and finish lines. Sorry to hear about all those injuries. All I can suggest is to take it easy; don't push yourself and don't overdo anything. > I might just have to reconcile myself to walking only... but walking > just doesn't do it for me like running does... you know what I mean, > don't you? Once you get the bug... ! I know what you mean; a year ago I was walking 5K.

Works for me.

This week I ran 24 minutes out of 30 - but not continuous. I've been alternating 5 min walk with 5 minute run. Then this week I did something like 5 min walk/7 min run/2 min walk/15 min run. This weekend my goal is to run 25 continuous minutes, which I think is doable. But it's still going to take me several more weeks just to get to 33 continuous minutes! (It's not my heart - it's my creaky old joints that seem to need a lot of recovery time and easy-does-it.) You've been my inspiration - so I'll be thinking about you tomorrow and hoping it all goes well for you! jen

Oh, for those who haven't figured it out, the Pat of "Pat's Race" is Pat Tillman; when he played for ASU, his number was 42. > This week I ran 24 minutes out of 30 - but not continuous. The the first two runs in the week I first ran 25 continuous minutes were R4, W3, R8, W3, R5 and R10, W3, R10 The week after that I ran 25 minutes three days, then 28 minutes the following week, and 30 the week after that. That finished the program, and I ran 33 minutes six times in the following two weeks. My last run was yesterday (Thursday) and it was my best pace yet for 33 minutes. I went further than the day where I couldn't finish the last ten seconds, and still had reserves left. I'm already thinking about my next race; I think it will be "Pat's Race" on April 7th. It is a 4.2 mile race, ending at the 42 yard line of Sun Devil Stadium (Arizona State University).
