I live in Atlanta and run at Stone Mountain and on a trade mill at a
local gym. The route is mostly concrete and asphalt. I am thinking
about adding trail running and track running to try out different
surfaces. It will be nice to know how those surfaces feel like.

Does anyone have any suggestions about trails(routes) and tracks close
to downtown Atlanta?

Here's a good mileage map, to track your distance.

Check runtheplanet.com. They seem to have a few listings.

The other thing to do would be take a look at online maps (google,
yahoo, ask) in satellite mode and figure out parks/trails in your
neighborhood. I've found this quite useful.

It seems to me I heard somewhere that 26.2 wrote in article

I live on the other side of the country but I see the Silver Comet Trail
mentioned occasionally, if that's in your vicinity. IIUC it's an
abandoned/converted rail right of way.

sent your request to a friend living in Atlanta. Her is his answer:

martin

Hey Martin,

I live about 30 minutes from downtown, so I'm probably not the best source
but here are a couple:

Piedmont Park is downtown: http://www.piedmontpark.org/do/walks.html

Silver Comet Trail is out a bit:  http://silvercomet.tripod.com/
http://www.pathfoundation.org/index.cfm?event=showSilverComet

Also, Georgia Tech is downtown - not sure if the tracks are open to the
public or not.

Hope that helps,

Brad

I would recommend any trail that leads OUT of Atlanta.

I asked that same question several months back and was advised to
check out Sweetwater Creek state park which was very close to where I
was staying when traveling to Atlanta for a couple of days. I did, it
was a nice run, although hilly and rocky in spots. Almost had it to
myself at 7:00 AM.
