Got to go to Atlanta last part of August. I usually stay out west of town the night before off I-20 about at Six Flags. Is there any good trail or park run areas out in that part of town? Thanks Frank

How much running were you planning? How long are you staying? Piedmont Donald

Short stay, more than likely come in one day, run the next morning and then go downtown for IWF. Leave that evening. I would stay longer, but have to be in Bourne, TX, by week end. But I am intrigued by the other options, particularly the sliver comet trail. I may come back in the fall and do that part from the lake through the tunnel and over the trestle at the very least. For great trail running you must go to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. http://www.nps.gov/kemo/index.htm. It is well worth the drive. It's about 25 miles north of 6 Flags. I don't get there often since it's on the other side of town, but you'll be a little closer. Kennesaw is in the far Northwest suburbs. It's nicely shaded, so you can keep a little more cool in the summer. There is one loop that is around 18 miles. If you're not used to hill running, take it easy. There are some tough hills. There is a trail that will avoid the worst of them. You can ask at the visitors center and pick up a free map. The trails are mostly hard packed dirt and stone. The trails are strictly runners, hikers, and horses (no bicycles). Another good option is The Silver Comet Trail. http://www.trailexpress.com/silvercomet/index.php http://www.trailexpress.com/silvercomet/maps.php It's about 15 miles north of 6 Flags. This is an old converted railway. You can basically run for up to 60 miles round trip on this. Eventually it will connect with Alabama's Chief Lagida Trail. So if you want a softer surface, you probably don't want to go here. If you don't mind the hard surface, it's not a bad trail. It's mostly asphalt and concrete. On nice weekends it can be rather crowded with cyclists and walkers. Also, there's the Sweetwater Creek State Park. http://gastateparks.org/info/sweetwater/. It's about 8 miles west of 6 flags. So if you have limited time, this is your best bet. I've never been there, but I've heard good things from runners that have been there. Have fun! Phil M.
