Subject: Another retired pro cyclist tackles marathon

Now that Armstrong is coming back to the NYC marathon, he will have an
even bigger target to beat than Jalabert's 2:55...

Abraham Olano <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Olano > ran the San
Sebasti=E1n marathon yesterday in 2:39.

And it isn't a very fast course iirc.

Sorry, never mind. Those are really bizarre split markers they chose
to record!

Cheers,

Actually, the course is described as "ideal para mejorar la marca
personal", it's a quite flat seaside marathon. The weak course records
and the winners' times merely reflect the smallnesss of the prize
purse.

BTW the (more famous) event you have in mind is probably the 20K
Behobia-San Sebasti=E1n which is run earlier in November. That course
includes "Alto de Gaintxurizketa"

.jpg
(and two other, smaller climbs).

Anders (been there, haven't done that)

Exactly - I mixed up the two (collegues from the club were there this
year) Doh!

Which is probably why these club&work mates did it (didn't known/remember
they'd been). Will ask what it was like.

This chap went sub-3 at Amsterdam 2005 and has been going for it again
since. He was just pipping me to the post in cross-countries last winter.

541 Olivier Hamon 3:10:13

This lad also went sub-3 at Amsterdam in 2003.

Apparently it wasn't ideally cool, but it wasn't too hot either,
12-18=B0C.

FWIW it would seem Stan didn't go out for a sub-3, he ran a split of
1:34/1:36 - while Ollie did, but finished with a painful-looking
1:28/1:42.

Returning to the subject in the header, the main difference in the two
former cyclists' preparation would be that Olano watched his weight and
lost seven kg, while Armstrong apparently preferred to cultivate his
pent-up penchant for developing a proper male physique. OTOH Olano
didn't do better than 2:53 on his first attempt (a year ago, on the
same course and several kilograms heavier).

Still on the subject of retired pro cyclists, fourth and the best
Spaniard with a 2:26 was 39-year-old Victor Gonzalo who was one of
Pedro Delgado's and Miguel Indurain's "gregari" (or "domestiques") in
the golden Reynolds/Banesto days. It was his fifth sub-2:30 marathon
this year.
