Subject: Ankle Sprain

Hi All,

I injured my ankle playing basketball 7 days ago. The next day I
noticed a little weakness but thought it was fine and set out for a
run. After 1 mile I was too conscience of it and decided it was best
to stop. Went to the dor the next day he told me it was a grade 1
sprain and to gave me a brace. I wore the brace for the past 3 days
but am thinking it caused more harm than good. I''m feeling the
difference in my ankles, a mild pain at times. I have been RICEing,
today I tried the bike just for 20 mins.

Is a good rule of thumb to wait until I feel no pain to start running
again. I'd like to get into it ASAP but don't want any recurring
injuries to come from starting too early. I would wear a brace while
running I think. I've never sprained an ankle before and just need
some advice.

Everyone heals differently but any advice on when what signs I should
look for to start again. IS the bike a good idea?

Thanks. I would really appreciate some advice.

So running is ok being again if it's braced or taped even if there's
mild discomfort before beginning?

I say absolutely not. The pain of a sprained ankle is telling you
something: let me heal.

I say do what you can to get your exercise fix that doesn't cause ankle
pain. At some point you can hike on it, but not jog. Later on, you might
find that you can jog very slowly, but not at your normal pace. Or that you
can go up hills, but not down. But avoid pain and let the dang thing heal.

Doing otherwise is causing more injury while your body is attempting the
repair job.

Ligaments heal slowly because they don't have much blood flow. Ice/heat
alternation will improve blood flow and healing, as will simply not
aggravating it. My experience is that icing halves or thirds the healing
time.

Per Lance Armstrong's coach, losing 5 days training only reduces your
fitness by about 1%. Messing up the ankle by working it when you shouldn't
will cause you to miss more training than just letting nature take its
course. And by stretching the damaged ligament (which is now weaker than it
was before the injury), you might give yourself chronic weak ankles.

Just my opinion, based on probably 8-10 sprains over 30 years...

You never sprained an ankle before this? You must be 8 years old or
have very stout ankles.
With sprains or with broken bones, there is a point at which you can
begin to run and the recovery process will not be stopped. With me it's
two weeks with a broken bone, but it has been longer for some sprains
and strains. It's an individual thing that you have to learn for
yourself. I see nothing wrong with giving an injury an early test. I
go out easy and see if the pain goes away. If it's runable I keep
going. I am ready to halt the test in just a few steps if the pain is
too agressive. With a sprained ankle, I would tape it up heavily and
run in three days almost regardless of initial pain level. The tape
would prevent major reinjury if I ran carefully. It is possible to run
in extreme pain and do no further damage. This is something you learn
over time.
Yes, a bike would keep your cardio system up and not bother the ankle
much.

Case in point, couple of years ago I sprained my ankle playing ball.
Gave it two weeks and then started my running again. That first
saturday morning back I went to play ball and sprained it again. This
time I was out 5 weeks, and had to wear a brace playing basketball for
the next 6 months. I was latter told if i would have waited to play
ball another week or two i would have been fine. This was because the
second sprain only happened because it was week from the first sprain.

When I sprained my ankle a few years ago -- "medium level sprain" -- the
orthopedist told me:
no running for 6 weeks but walking is not only fine but encouraged
no brace
prescribed physical therapy as an option to help things heal better &
faster.

Your orthopedist knows what he is talking about. Al Bundy does not. It
takes six weeks for the scar tissue to fully develop

If it hurts don't run on it, plain and simple.

Really my question is should I wait until I feel absolutely no
discomfort before I go out? It been a little over a week and im still
feeling uncomfortable from walking, wouldn't call it pain. It's not a
bad sprain, doc said grade 1.
